The dynasty RB aging curve

A running back's dynasty value follows a steep bell curve. Rookie value depends almost entirely on draft capital and landing spot. Year 2–3 backs with a workhorse role trade near WR1 prices. From age 27 onward the market discounts them aggressively — even a career year rarely returns their pre-season value.

Contract status matters more than at any other position

An RB entering a contract year on a team that has already drafted a rookie is a sell candidate. Backs who just signed a second contract with committed touches are the safest holds.

Using RBs in a rebuild

If you are rebuilding, treat any RB over age 27 as a rental. Trade the veteran for future rookie picks now — you cannot afford to hold depreciating assets through a multi-year rebuild.

FAQ

Why do RBs decay so fast in dynasty?

Running back fantasy production peaks between ages 23–26 and drops sharply after 28 due to workload wear, team turnover, and rookie replacement. That decay curve is priced into every RB value here.

Should I trade for a workhorse or a committee back?

Workhorses (250+ touches, 3-down role) hold ~2× the value of committee backs at the same age. Target true bell-cows even at a small premium.

When do rookie RBs peak in value?

Rookie RB trade value peaks right after the NFL Draft and again after Week 4 of their rookie season if they lock in the starting role. Rebuilders should sell into either of those windows.
